The variety of living musical traditions in Europe is extraordinary. This important part of the European culture, which belongs to the every day life of the many European citizens, merits to be protected. Naturally musical traditions are open to integrate new developments and variations – be it in adapting instruments, tunes or other musical phenomenons that constitutes the characteristics of different musical traditions and thus opens up for interesting interconnections to be located.
For the time being, the different traditions have a strong link to their specific region where they are practiced and fostered. On a European level, however, the existing knowledge is rarely shared, thus exchange and cooperation is limited. Nevertheless, interesting parallels can be found as well as particularities which invite to stimulating cooperation on a European level, which can animate interesting new creations in all musical genres and which demand further scientific investigation.
